after competing in the Falmouth Regatta. George Bickford and William Real Richards - a crew member of the pilot cutter 'Spy' - had left in a 'dipper' (a small punt) which was approximately 8 or 9 feet long to go to a vessel supposed to sail between 9 and 10 'o' clock. [They were] to take her out of the harbour. At about that time the weather worsened. Next morning the oars, some of the gear from the boat, and an empty maund in which they had taken some meat to the vessel were picked up on the beach near the lighthouse. A little later in the day the dipper was found near the same spot. The body of William Richards was picked up on Thursday 18th August and George Bickford on the Saturday. George's watch had stopped at 20 past 10.
